Surgical & Critical Care APP Fellowship

The UCSF Medical Center APP Fellowship is accredited with distinction as an Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship Program by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation PracticeTransition Programs.

The current sites included in this accreditation with distinction designation are:

  1. UCSF Hellen Diller Medical Center at Parnassus Heights
  2. UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay
  3. UCSF San Mateo Primary and Specialty Care

The Surgical and Critical Care APP Fellowship is accredited with distinction for the following specialty/service lines:

  1. Surgery/Transplant/Critical Care Medicine

The program is in its tenth cohort and is supported by the UCSF Office of Advanced Practice Providers, UCSF Health, and the UCSF School of Nursing. The program accepts certified physician assistants or adult gerontology acute care nurse pracitioners with certification from the ANCC (AGACNP-BC) or AACN (ACNPC-AG).

The fellowship program is designed to expand upon the knowledge and skills acquired during APP training. It prepares licensed and certified PAs and AG-ACNPs to provide care to adults in critical care and surgical settings through focused clinical rotations. It also emphasizes the development of advanced assessment, planning, negotiation, and collaboration skills and is fortified by critical care skills workshops and evidence-based practice projects.

UCSF is a leader in expanding the roles and responsibilities of APPs in specialty areas of clinical practice. The fellowship offers a rich didactic experience that includes rotations with adult inpatient services for:

  • Critical Care Medicine
  • Liver Transplant
  • Kidney Transplant
  • Advanced Lung Disease
  • Cardiac ICU
  • Acute Care & General Surgery
  • Multiple elective rotation options

 

UCSF is a recognized world leader in developing innovative solutions to health care delivery problems. The fellowship program leverages the resources within the UCSF system to prepare novice APPs to excel in a tertiary or quaternary medical center.

Deadline: The current application deadline for APPs is 5pm on March 31, 2025.

Fellowship Requirements

  • Master's or doctoral degree from an accredited NP or PA program (obtained within 18 months of November 1, 2025)
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Current American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Demonstrated excellence in scholarship, communication, leadership, problem resolution, and teaching

  • Controlled Substance Utilization Review and Evaluation System (CURES) registration

Administrative requirements

Any employment offer with UCSF is contingent on the following:

  • Successful background check
  • A health clearance through UCSF Occupational Health department
  • A negative substance abuse screening test
  • Verification of any documents required for the position
  • Verification of identity and eligibility to work in the USA
  • The completion of the new hire process, including all required paperwork
  • Credentialing process via the UCSF Medical Staff Services Office

Application Cycle

Responses and offers will be sent out in May. Successful applicant(s) will have one week from receipt to accept the offer. The fellowship will start in November of 2025 after completion of the UCSF hiring, credentialing, and privileging processes.
