Frequently Asked Questions:

What can I do to prepare myself as a candidate for the program?

We are looking for professional, academic (including clinical experience) and research experience that demonstrates your interest or passion in the specialty for which you are applying (surgery and critical care medicine, oncology, or emergency medicine).

If you are strongly interested in the program, we recommend applying for your California APP license as soon as possible. This process can take several months.

What is the length of the program? When does it start and finish?

The program is 12 months and runs from November 1st through October 31st, annually.

As an APP fellow, will I gain hands on operative experience?

Currently our fellowship programs do not include surgical first assisting.

Is there pediatric content?

Currently, our fellowships are all adult in focus. We hope to expand to pediatrics in the near future.

What national board certifications are accepted?

See the requirements for the specific fellowship you are interested in.

Do you accept out of state applicants?

Yes. We welcome those from out of state and believe it strengthens the diversity of the program.

What is the compensation?

Fellows are UCSF employees who receive a salary and full benefits. Currently, the compensation is $108,900 per year, plus benefits.

Are APP fellows guaranteed a career position upon program completion?

We hope that all fellowship graduates will choose a career with UCSF upon program completion. Ultimately, a career position at the end of the fellowship will depend on the graduate's interests and current position openings. Our retention rate is approximately 70% in matching fellowship graduates to a career position at UCSF.
